ABSTRACT: In the thirteen years, Brazil has produced about 353 thousands tons/year of passion fruit and processed 123.55 thousands/year. The per capita consumption was 1.5 kg/person/year of fresh fuit and 0.33 kg/person/year as juice and pulp. Additionally, it can be emphasized that the production in the fruit market as sourness passion fruit in Brazilian Savannahs in the year 2000, reached 50.5 thousand tons/year, from which 35% was destined to industry. This study was conducted as field research interview, carried out in the 1998/2000 period, considering a sample of 11% of a population, composed by passion fruit producers, technical assistance personnel, nursery producers, and industry managers, involving twelve production municipalities. Additionally,... |

ABSTRACT: The project "Conservation and Management of the Biodiversity of the Cerrado biome - CMBBC", chose as its regional study area, the geographical region of northeastern Goiás called Paranã-Pirineus. One of the initial tasks of this project was the socioeconomic characterization of the 34 cities and towns (municipalities) which comprise the Paranã-Pirineus regional study area. In order to compare these cities and towns and identify those most in need of assistance, four indices were constructed: a health development index, educational development index, sanitary development index and an economic development index, using data from the last Brazilian demographic census. These four indices were later combined to yield a socioeconomic development index,... |

Transdisciplinary approaches that consider both socioeconomic and biophysical processes are central to understanding and managing rapid change in coral reef systems worldwide. To date, there have been limited attempts to couple the two sets of processes in dynamic models for coral reefs, and these attempts are confined to reef systems in developed countries. We present an approach to coupling existing biophysical and socioeconomic models for coral reef systems in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. The biophysical model is multiscale, using dynamic equations to capture local-scale ecological processes on individual reefs, with reefs connected at regional scales by the ocean transport of larval propagules. The agent-based socioeconomic model simulates... |

ABSTRACT: The Brazilian savana covers a quarter of the national Brazilian territory. About that, 127 millions he are possible for agricultural managerial, 48% were already absorved by productive process. So, the remainder is constituted by frontiers waiting for exploration, part of that was geographicaly placed in areas of North and Northeast regions of country. The area covered with Brazilian savanas, in Northeast region, is abour 361.858,8 km2, and refer to four state (Bahia, Piauí, Ceará and Maranhão). From 1.980 to 2.000, the grain and the oleaginous production, in that region, ocuped about 1.859,4 thousands ha. Roice was the main production, followed by corn and soy. The cultivated area evolution with that grains and with that oleaginous show a tip... |

Coral reefs provide ecosystem goods and services for millions of people in the tropics, but reef conditions are declining worldwide. Effective solutions to the crisis facing coral reefs depend in part on understanding the context under which different types of conservation benefits can be maximized. Our global analysis of nearly 1,800 tropical reefs reveals how the intensity of human impacts in the surrounding seascape, measured as a function of human population size and accessibility to reefs ("gravity"), diminishes the effectiveness of marine reserves at sustaining reef fish biomass and the presence of top predators, even where compliance with reserve rules is high. Critically, fish biomass in high-compliance marine reserves located where human impacts... |

A growing body of work has emphasized the importance of residential areas to the overall green infrastructure of cities and recognizes that outcomes related to these areas are best studied using a social-ecological approach. We conducted vegetation surveys to evaluate yard practices that relate to the state of the yard vegetation, including species diversity and abundance, vegetation structure, and the percent of green area of yards versus paved areas, at the Río Piedras watershed within the San Juan metropolitan area. We used concomitant social household surveys to evaluate the association of social-economic and demographic factors at the household scale with these vegetation characteristics, as well as with landscape-level characteristics... |

For generations communities in the Western Pacific have employed a range of resource management techniques (including periodic reef closures, gear restrictions, entry limitations, and the protection of spawning aggregations) to limit marine resource use. Localized control over marine resources, commonly known as customary marine tenure (CMT), is the legal and cultural foundation for many of these practices. Because of their perceived potential to meet both conservation and community goals, these traditional resource management techniques are being revitalized by communities, governments, and NGOs as an integral part of national and regional marine conservation plans in the Pacific. However, the viability of conservation strategies built on a foundation... |
